Hi Steve!

It sure was fun reading the story about your C++ romance and all that has
come of it. Congratulations.

I'm examining a copy of your textbook right now and considering it for a
C++ course for high school kids that I begin NEXT week at Sayre School in
Lexington, KY. Yeah, I know, I'm doing everything at the last minute.
Anyway, I like your book a lot (though I'd love to use the dialogues from
Who's Afraid...) but have a couple of questions.

...

I also wanted to say that I really appreciate what you're trying to
accomplish with your writing. I'm a writer myself and have published eight
books -- none of them technical. But one of my goals as a writer has always
been to bridge the gap between the academic/technical world and the
everyday world of the "ordinary" person. I despise academic or highly
technical writing. That's why I'm drawn to your work.

...

Cordially,

Verne Becker

This is in reply to Dr. Paul Havlak's question about introductory texts for
C++.

I have spent the summer preparing a course, and found myself using three
excellent books (I had no knowledge of C++ before the summer).

...

Introduction to C++ by Steve Heller
I found this book to be very good on defining terms. It also has an outstanding
example on introduction to classes, which is developed in a way that allows
you to use new constructs as you go.

Steve, I am reading it, slowly as I have my studies, but am really
enjoying it. You are explaining things about computers which are
completely new to me, in a great way. I will keep you up on how it is
going. Is Who is Afraid of C++ very different in content, should I try
and get it. I tried various times, but was having difficulties here in
Tuscaloosa, and naturally will have more trouble in Mexico.
Does Introduction to C++ cover everything you had in Who is Afraid?
I have taught Pascal and taken some courses in C, they were not offering
C++, so I am missing the object oriented part of programming :(
Does your book cover data structures, that is lists, queues and stacks.
Well, I saw that yes to stacks, but the other two? About lists,
circular, linked, double linked, etc.
I know I am jumping ahead, but I am looking forward for a text book to
use in the classroom, and I will be covering the AP A and the AB.

By the way, is it Susan Heller now?
if so best wishes to you both! and if not yet, the good wishes stay
anyway
Jenka

Hello,
I am just writing you in response to your question about where I
saw your book Introduction to C++. First of all, I am
just now getting really interested in programming computers. I have
previous knowledge of both Basic and Pascal. Recently I taught myself
html and plan to learn Java sometime in the future. Currently, I am
studying Perl and C++. I went to the bookstore mainly to find a good
book on starting out with C++ since I have very little previous
experience with this particular language. When I came across your book,
at Borders Bookstore in Austin, Texas, I immediately picked it up to
take a look at it because of not only the title, but the comment C++
Compiler Included as well. I really like having a compiler along
with it, even if it not complete, because it gives me a chance to test
my ability and fluency in the language off of my computer without having
to go out and buy the compiler from Borland which is hundreds of
dollars. Anyway, I read your prelude to the book and liked what I read,
so I bought it. I have just now started reading the book and learning
the language, because I am trying to teach myself Perl at the same
time. Well, it looks like a good book to me and I think I will enjoy
reading it and learning from it. One more thing though, I would really
appreciate if you could notify me of anything concerning this book,
whether it be concerning the text or the CD-ROM. Well thanks for your
time and I hope to hear from you again some time in the future.
                                            Bye,
                                                Eric Welch
